The story begins in NYU's Financial Accounting class during the spring semester of their freshman year. Sandra and her friend, Michelle, used to joke that Michael was the teacher's pet since he always answered the professor’s questions. In fact, it wasn’t until midway through the semester that he knew she was even in his class! She said hi to him outside of the Kimmel student center before the freshman business seminar, and embarrassingly he didn’t even recognize her. After that day, on the rare occasion that Sandra and Michael would sit next to each other, they would have small talk but that was the extent of their interactions.
Thankfully, during the summer both Michael and Sandra stayed in New York for their internships. Michael had heard about the summer fellowship hosted by NYU's Asian American Christian Fellowship (AACF) through a good friend and decided to check it out. At the first gathering, Michael happened to be placed in a bible study group that Sandra was leading!
The first occasion where they got to know each other on a more personal basis was during a picnic at Central Park, where everyone showed up an hour late—everyone except Michael and Sandra! Chatting during that picnic and becoming better acquainted through other AACF hangouts, movie premieres, and game nights, Michael began to develop feelings for Sandra. Midway through the summer Michael finally mustered up the courage to tell Sandra about his feelings for her and to ask if she wanted to start dating (or at least to start thinking about it). They started to meet up regularly at Cha An, a Japanese tea house in East Village, to see where things might lead.
Summer quickly came to an end, leaving Michael and Sandra with a tough decision to make. He had already committed to studying abroad in Ghana for the upcoming fall semester, whereas she had committed to Australia for the spring. Was it wise to start dating, knowing that they would be apart for the first year of their relationship? Likely not. So they ultimately decided that it was best to hold off.
However... fate chose otherwise! Due to unforeseen circumstances that summer, NYU suddenly cancelled its program in Ghana, forcing Michael to come back to New York for the fall semester. On August 14th 2014, Michael took Sandra out for a nice dinner along the Hudson River, where they decided to make their relationship official!
Fast forward four and a half years to February 14th, 2019—Michael and Sandra had graduated from NYU and were both working in the city. Valentines Day was on a Thursday, so Michael had suggested they go out for a nice dinner on Friday instead to avoid the Valentines day crowd. Little did Sandra know, but Michael was trying to lower her expectations for Valentines Day so she would not suspect the proposal.
That evening Michael brought Sandra to Cha An (full circle!) for a "casual" hangout over tea and dessert. As they were waiting for their tea, Michael read his Valentines day card to Sandra aloud, recounting memories of when they first met, precious times spent with their friends at NYU, fun moments traveling together, and tough trials that taught them how to better love each other. He then asked Sandra to open the teapot that was just served and in it (to Sandra's complete shock and surprise) was a ring!
Thank you for reading our story! God has been so good to us and we thank Him for the path, however winding, that led us to each other :). We are overjoyed to be celebrating our marriage with our beloved family and friends!
Hi! I'm Michael. I am excited to be able to celebrate my
wedding this December with so many close friends and family members.
Sandra and I met during our college years at New York University (NYU),
bonded over our shared love of movies, board games, and asian
food, and are now beginning a new adventure in Evanston, Illinois
(just outside of Chicago) as I start my PhD program at
Northwestern.
When I am not thinking about politics and policy, listening to podcasts,
or interrupting a conversation with a corny joke,
I enjoy playing basketball, and singing and playing guitar and
piano. And, as a Houston native, I enjoy a good plate of fajitas
or a heaping serving of brisket as much as any other red-blooded
Texan, and cheering at the top of my lungs at a high-octane Rockets game
outing at the Toyota Center.
Hi! I’m Sandra, and I am thrilled to be celebrating with everyone in December!
I grew up in Taiwan, where I have many treasured memories of
biking & hiking in the
gorgeous mountains, pigging out & playing games at night markets, and being silly
with my friends (I grew up with most of them from 1st - 12th grade given our
unique school system).
After high school I moved to the big apple, where I eventually met Michael.
My four years at NYU was filled with joy and personal growth, and
studying abroad in Sydney, Australia with Michael and friends was definitely
a highlight! I will never forget the
pristine Sydney beaches and the rolling hills in New Zealand. I stayed in NYC
after college and started my marketing career at a Pepsico.
Fortunately, I was able to secure a seamless transfer from the NY office to
the Chicago office.
Although I will dearly miss our NYC friends and all the memories
we made together, I am also looking forward
to starting a new chapter of life in Chicago!
Hi! I'm Kevin. I am a newly minted pastor, and I
enjoy having deep conversations and being a goofball with others.
I initially got to know Michael through leading a men's bible study with him as
part of the Asian American Christian Fellowship at NYU.
Following that during our weekly video chats, phone calls, or
breakfast meetups, we got to deepen our understanding of one
another's greatest hopes and dreams as well as our enduring struggles.
I am truly glad we were able to "do life together" over the past six years!
The countless nights I've spent with Sandra and Michael, eating dinner and
playing board games will always be one of my warmest, favorite
memories of the time we've shared. I am looking forward to celebrating
their love for one another!
Hi! I'm Warren. Michael and I met in Bellaire high school choir. Through a shared passion for tomfoolery and German speed-singing, our grand friendship was born! During those days, we would watch endless re-runs of SportsCenter while playing pool, record covers of songs, like Baby by Justin Bieber, watch NBA Finals games at Buffalo Wild Wings, and play Call of Duty from dawn to dusk. I'm glad to see Michael finally found someone to keep his goofiness in check!
Hi! I'm Andrew, and I'm honored to be a groomsman (and work league softball
captain and friend) of one of the kindest, hardest working, and punniest RAs at
the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
This year, I started my PhD at UCLA, hoping to
work on issues related to education and labor.
For fans of The West Wing, one of my favorite quotes from the show:
"Mallory, education is the silver bullet. Education is everything.
We don't need little changes, we need gigantic, monumental changes.
Schools should be palaces. The competition for the best teachers should be fierce.
They should be making six-figure salaries. Schools should be incredibly expensive
for government and absolutely free of charge to its citizens, just like national defense.
That's my position. I just haven't figured out how to do it
yet."
Hi, I'm Ray! I am a pastor, part-time professor (Linear Algebra Boo. Calculus Yay! ), and photographer (who covertly took photos for Michael and Sandra's engagement). I've known “Mandra” since the start of their relationship, when ebola "prevented" Michael from going to study abroad and parting with his love. Since then they have been a huge blessing to everyone around them, and I've just been along for the ride!
Hi, I'm Edward! I am a childhood friend of Michael's, whose known him since we were both still in diapers. From elementary through high school we were inseparable, making mischief, working out, and lazing about at my house. I'm glad the day has finally come to celebrate these two tying the knot!
Hi! I'm Tina, and as Sandra's one and only older sister, I've known her for as long as she has been alive. I still remember the day she told me about Michael, and it's been a joy to watch them grow in their relationship since. Can't wait to celebrate with them on their wedding day! I currently live in Boston with my husband and newborn baby boy. The wedding will be our baby's first gig as a ring boy - we're working on making sure he doesn't steal the show the day of :).
Hi, I'm Anna.
I am a potato who has enough energy to power up your house for days.
I love the creative arts and hope one day I will be working in a field
where I can thrive and empower others.
I met Sandra because she thought we had the same bedsheets!
We both dormed in Founders and was in the AACF freshman group.
We both enjoy sharing God's love so it was something we connected over
and was able to do it freely because we were freshies.
I met Michael when I saw Sandra was dating this man!
I immediately messaged Michael and said, "You better take care of my bae!"
before we even met.
I can't believe the day has come where I handover my Sandra to the man who got her heart!
Hi, I'm Jackie! I am an Oncology Registered Nurse who’d choose In-N-Out over Shake Shack any day, but has a special place in her heart for a New York bacon, egg, and cheese on a toasted everything bagel. How did I meet Sandra and Michael? Sandra was the first person who welcomed me when I initially joined AACF, and Michael was the first person in college I met who also had a nut allergy. A quirky fact about myself is I can genuinely teach you how to Dougie (or do the Wobble)!!!
Hi, I'm Kathy! I've celebrated this beautiful couple since we adventured from cooking glorious meals to taking out Mt. Cook in 2015, and am thrilled to witness their growing old together in the years to come!
Hi, I'm Kaitlyn! In my second year of college, my first impression of Michael was “the guy with crazy-good vocals”, who could always be seen with Sandra, the super-sweet, generous, and open-hearted gal who seemed to always be serving one way or other. They soon went from AACF legends to fast and faithful friends, and being able to grow, serve, and do life alongside them has truly been one of the greatest joys and treasures. To the couple whose love for God and each other strengthens many others—I love you and congrats!!

We recommend flying into George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), which is Houston's main airport.
The most straightforward option is to rent a car, since the public transportation in Houston is not so well suited to the huge city sprawl and certainly will not reach the outskirts of the city and beyond, like where our venue is located.
If you're not renting a car, we would suggest taking the shuttle from one of our recommended hotels to get to the venue on the wedding day. For all other transportation needs use services like Lyft and Uber to get around Houston city proper.
We have reserved a block of rooms at the Hilton Home2Suites Westchase in Houston, and at the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham in Conroe (which is much closer to the venue).
Please follow this link if you would like to use our discounted rate at the Hilton Home2Suites (~$82 per night for a room with two queen beds and ~$79 per night for a room with a single king bed).
If you would like to get our discounted rate with La Quinta (~$84 per night for a room with two queen beds), please call them at 936-228-0790 and tell them that you are booking as part of Michael Cai and Sandra Chang's Wedding.
If you would prefer to find alternate living arrangements via AirBnB or a different hotel option, then be sure to look for options in and around Lake Conroe and the Woodlands to be close to the venue. Otherwise, downtown Houston has a lot of great food and entertainment to offer! So if you'd prefer to be closer to downtown, there are plenty of good options there too.
To officially RSVP, notify us of your dietary restrictions, and provide us with other important details, please fill out the form linked below no later than October 31st.
As many of you know, we both moved to Evanston, Illinois this past fall so that Michael could begin his PhD at Northwestern. Hence, we have already acquired much of the major furniture and household items for our current place. If you would like to give us a gift, we would appreciate your donations to one of our various funds (honeymoon, adventure, etc), which you can contribute to here.
If you would like to give a gift that is not cash, we have also listed a few items in the registry, linked above.
